Dit boek geeft praktische informatie over inspanningstests aan studenten fysiotherapie en bewegingswetenschappen, en aan professionals in de (sport)gezondheidszorg zoals medici, paramedici en bewegingswetenschappers. Zij kunnen dit boek gebruiken om meteen aan de slag te gaan met inspanningstests. Inspanningstests zijn essentieel in op maat gesneden trainingsprogramma's voor mensen met een chronische aandoening. Ze zijn nodig voor een goede evaluatie en maken een training effectiever. Daardoor worden de motivatie en therapietrouw van de patiënt vergroot. Inspanningstests is een praktisch boek. Het behandelt eerst de theorie van de fysiologie achter de tests en het instrumentarium dat de fysieke prestaties meet. Daarna bespreekt de auteur verschillende typen inspanningstests en de manier waarop de resultaten ervan geïnterpreteerd moeten worden. Ook gaat het boek in op inspanningstests voor specifieke doelgroepen zoals kindere n en chronisch zieken. Tot slot geeft Inspanningstests een handige vragenlijst en een uitvoerige literatuurlijst. In deze vierde, herziene druk staan nieuwe paragrafen over onder meer de intervalshuttleruntest, de endurance shuttleruntest, het Dubowy loopband protocol en de Fitkids loopbandtest. Ook is er een stappenplan voor een systematische interpretatie van inspanningstests toegevoegd. Auteur Tim Takken is klinisch inspanningsfysioloog en verbonden aan het Kinderbewegingscentrum van het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht. Takken promoveerde in 2003 aan de faculteit Geneeskunde van de Universiteit Utrecht. Hij publiceerde ruim 200 artikelen in diverse nationale en internationale vaktijdschriften. Eerder verschenen de boeken Wielrennen en Wetenschap en Inspanningsfysiologie bij kinderen van zijn hand.

This textbook consists of ten chapters, and is a must-read to all medical and health professionals, who already have basic knowledge of how to analyze their clinical data, but still, wonder, after having done so, why procedures were performed the way they were. The book is also a must-read to those who tend to submerge in the flood of novel statistical methodologies, as communicated in current clinical reports, and scientific meetings. In the past few years, the HOW-SO of current statistical tests has been made much more simple than it was in the past, thanks to the abundance of statistical software programs of an excellent quality. However, the WHY-SO may have been somewhat under-emphasized.
